Friends of Hue is a non-profit organization dedicated to youth empowerment and humanitarian assistance in Vietnam. Through our participatory, collaborative programs, we respond to local needs and seek to empower local change-agents. Find out more about us.
First, we meet basic needs. We take an empathetic approach by listening to community voices. We respond to local needs through flood relief and community building efforts. At our children’s shelter, we provide our children a supportive, family environment.
Then, we empower individuals to dream. We believe in the power of the individual to be change agents in his/her community, locally or globally. We teach our kids to dream big, because we believe they have the potential to be the leaders of tomorrow in their community.
Finally, we teach life, vocational, leadership skills and provide economic opportunities. Envisioning a better future is only the first step. In order to achieve your dreams, you need both hard and soft skills. We build this through capacity building and knowledge transfer.
Hanh Vo, our Shelter Director, will represent Friends of Hue at the United Nations World Conference on Youth 2014 held in Sri Lanka. She is among 150 Youth Delegates, chosen out of 4000 applicants. Read more about her accomplishments and story here!
Our children’s shelter is the heart of our organization. At the shelter, the children receive lodging, food, medical treatment, and an education. Our staff members provide a safe and loving but also disciplined and enriching environment in which each child is encouraged to do his or her best. These children are encouraged to “ Dream Big” — that all things are possible.
We are piloting a six-month project-based leadership program this summer to cultivate professional skills for 40 disadvantaged youth around the Hue community. The youth participate in a two-week strengths-based leadership camp to design a critical service- learning project for the community and spend six months executing the projects under the guidance of community leaders.
Hue is notorious for its particularly extreme weather; its summers are blisteringly hot and its rainy seasons often result in tremendously destructive floods. FHF, since 1999 has helped and continues to help households in Hue recover from these floods by providing them with food and materials they can use to repair damages.
We are extremely committed to crafting a different volunteer experience for each individual as we employ skills-based volunteering. This means that we craft the projects according to an individuals unique skill set, interests, and strengths in order to construct a meaningful volunteer experience for both FHF and the individual or group.
We provide manpower training, recruitment, and operations for small global businesses in workflow processing, including accounting, purchase orders, invoicing, and personal assistance. In return, the businesses donate a percentage (from 50-100%) to our operations. We employ those who have graduated from our shelter.
